Dupont Lighters

ST Dupont began in France 1952 and since then has surpassed all other manufacturers in sleek and innovative lighter designs. Look for Ligne 1, Ligne 2 and Gatsby lighters to appreciate lighter design at its best.

S.T. Dupont, a company that manufactures an elegant and classy line of leather goods, was founded in 1872 by Mr. Simon Tissot-Dupont. Understandably, S.T. stands for Simon Tissot. Mr. Dupont had 2 sons, Lucien and Andre, to whom he handed and entrusted the company. These 2 sons were responsible for giving the company its worldwide fame.

Sometime in the 30's, S.T Dupont made its first lighter for one of its loyal and significant customers, The Maharajah of Patiala, who aired out his desire of having a small case with a built-in lighter. This lighter was made of solid gold with a high possibility of having an authentic Chinese lacquer finish. As expected, the Faverges laboratoire which houses the factory, immediately considered the lighter as one of its special and distinct creations.

Years later, in December 1953, the company introduced the D57 which is their first gas lighter. The total gas flow output of the D57 was 320,000 units, and this can be adjusted using a separate key. Unfortunately, in France or J&H services, this kind of lighter can no longer be repaired by S.T. Dupont.

About 6 years after S.T. Dupont introduced its gas lighter, the company launched the small and large versions of the BS model (which stands for Briquet Simple or Standard). This lighter had a tiny wheel on top to stop the gas flow. This was particularly useful when having the flints changed. Until 1973, the company were able to manufacture 1.4 million of these lighters. This kind of lighter is no longer being produced, but those with these pieces can still have it repaired or brought back to its perfect working condition.

Following the BS, S.T. Dupont set forth the BR (Briquet Reglable) model in 1965. This lighter had an automatic gas flow stop when the flint needs to be changed and an adjuster for the gas flow which works using the horizontal cylinder found beside the nozzle. Until 1984, 15 million of these lighters were sold. Up to this day, the BR model is still available and is now known as the LINE 1 model. New versions of this model no longer have the automatic gas flow stop feature. This piece is capable of having an angle pipe flame fitted or a wide cigar flame burner.

Moving forward to 1979, the company launched the GATSBY model, which is the PN model's smaller version. This kind of lighter is capable of having a dual flame burner for cigars, or angle flame for pipes.
