Scripto Lighters
In 1955, the Scripto-Vu lighter was brought forth into the market. It aimed to gain foothold in ad specialty, hoping to get a bigger part of Zippo's market share percentage. Bearing smooth curves, bright chrome and a color band, the Vu-lighter's features and design were very well-suited for that specific genre.
The Scripto-Vu lighter integrates the windproof and flip top features of Zippo. In addition, it had a clear plastic tank through which users will know how much fuel is left. It utilizes a fuel release button that infuses the wick when pressed.
Their reason for such design is to avoid fuel evaporation. It worked in such a way that it regulates when the wick has to be moistened. Zippo on the other hand, still saturates its wick by tamping cotton in its fuel. This minimizes spilling but also makes the fuel prone to faster evaporation.
Vu-lighters are available in 2 different sizes. You can choose from a full-sized version suitable for men, and one with a slim and smaller design fit for the ladies. Zippo also offers these sizes for their lighters.
The clear tank design of the Vu lighter has an added advantage. Upon putting the parts together, a plastic card, measuring about 1x1 inch, was inserted in the tank. This brought about more capabilities and enhanced performance since it makes it possible to print onto plastic materials instead of printing on the lighter itself. Decorative items such as logos and photos can be displayed and seen in the lighter fluid.
Unfortunately, some slipups were detected. Because of its physical qualities, even minor scratches are evident. Considering how most people handle their pocket lighters, putting it together with metallic objects like keys, coins, etc., scratches are really inevitable.
Over time, a yellowish tint was observed on the plastic tanks. This was mainly caused by using cheaper fluids. People also became apprehensive when using these lighters at certain heights.
The fuel release button of the Vu lighter obstructed the fuel flow to the wick its rubber o-ring. It also supported the building up of pressure in the tank. Based on these, you can make your conclusions as to why Zippo is the more famous pocket lighter at present.
