Zippo, An American Icon

Zippo lighters are collected by smokers and nonsmokers alike due to its universal appeal. The Zippo is more than just a cigarette lighter – it goes far beyond that. Not only is it an ideal collectible, but it is also a symbol of American patriotism. In addition to its original purpose, the Zippo lighter can act as an accessory to supplement one’s style. The first batch of Zippo lighters was produced in the 1930’s as the Zippo Windproof lighters, which are now treated as valuable collectibles. The Zippo lighter is simply an American icon. It is comparable to the timeless names of James Dean, the Corvette, and the All-American apple pie. Zippo’s reliable, historical, and collectible lighters are currently sold by the millions and praised by fans from all over the world.

Zippo: The Lighter of the Working Class

In 1932, founder George G. Blaisdell observed a friend of his struggle with an Austrian lighter in Bradford, Pennsylvania. He noticed that the lighter was difficult to use because it required the use of two hands. Also, it was unfortunate that lighter’s case dented very easily. After that experience, Blaisdell set out to design his very own lighter in the hopes of creating one that was more efficient and reliable. Today, Blaisdell’s lighter is known as the Zippo (which was named as such because it sounded modern).

A year later, the Zippo began the manufacturing process. Many of Blaisdell’s acquaintances thought that his idea was ridiculous, especially considering the poor financial state of the country at that time (Great Depression). At $1.95, the Zippo lighter was sold with a lifetime warranty, and soon gained enough popularity to be labeled as a hit.

Zippo: A Lighter for All

Currently, the Zippo lighter is available in a large variety of models and colors. Zippos can be utilized by different types of consumers – business executives, soldiers, and even biker girls. Zippos are for the most part used as lighters, but they can also complete an outfit as an accessory. Some popular models include Joe Camel, Japanese, Vintage, and Vietnam lighters, which originate from the World War II era. Zippos range from expensive to cheap and from new to used. However, it should be noted that a used lighter is not as a valuable as an unused one.

Collecting Zippo lighters can prove to an enjoyable experience for those that are awed by the American icon that was once created by George Blaisdell. Is you want to start a collection, the best advice is to shop at eBay, which offers both used and new Zippos for less than $10.
