Basic matches are those that you can use anywhere and are widely available in all supermarkets, while the wood water type can usually be bought from a sailing supply shop.
Another tool that you can use for making fire is the magnesium bar, also known as a steel match. This is tiny rod of steel that produces magnesium when grazed intensely with a knife. The magnesium then ignites, even when wet.
It is also helpful to use a magnifying glass in the process. This will be used to focus the sun’s rays on the tinder. If you’re not too familiar with what tinder is, it is the highly flammable item that starts the fire. It is combustive even in wet areas. You can use various resources to serve as tinder; you can use old newspapers which are rolled out and applied with paraffin wax, or a film contained filled with refuse and dabbed with some lighter fluid. You can also get readily available commercial tinder from stores. When you have everything you need, place the tinder and your fire-making tools in a water-resistant container, cover with tape, and have it ready in your survival kit.
